VITA’s success relies on the dedication of volunteers from all walks of life—no accounting experience required. Whether you’re a tax preparer or an office assistant, your help makes a real difference in our community.
Join us and make an impact! We offer flexible training schedules to prepare for IRS certification. Here are the volunteer roles available:
- Tax Preparer: Help taxpayers complete returns, ensuring accuracy. Requires 9 hours of online training.
- Quality Reviewer: Review completed returns for accuracy and offer feedback. Requires 9 hours of online training.
- Scheduler: Assist with screening and scheduling appointments.
- Office Assistant: Help with site operations, survey completion, and traffic flow management.

Host a VITA Site
Become a Capital Region VITA partner by providing free tax preparation services to hardworking families and individuals in your community!
Get Started
- Contact the VITA Program Director, Andrew Kochian, to express your interest
- A meeting will be set up to discuss your plans to host a VITA site with Andrew and the UWGCR Chief Impact Officer, Claire Reid.
- From there, your plans and contact information will be sent to the IRS-SPEC for further evaluation and development.
Attributes of a Model VITA Site
- Site preparation
- Secure site location that provides computers and supplies
- Install/maintain IRS-provided software
- Develop a recruitment method to attract potential volunteers
- Provides instructors for all training
- Ensures the use of reference materials
- Provides a thorough Quality Review Process
