About Capital Region VITA

Capital Region VITA, formerly the CA$H Coalition (Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope), is a community-driven initiative powered by United Way of the Greater Capital Region. Our mission is to help individuals and families keep more of what they earn, build financial stability, and achieve long-term success.

As part of the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, we offer 100% FREE Federal and New York State tax preparation for income-eligible individuals and families. We also provide financial education, access to essential resources, and asset-building support to help people take control of their financial future.

Why Choose Capital Region VITA?

  • Powered by United Way – A trusted nonprofit network ensuring you receive every tax credit and deduction you’re eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC).
  • Truly Free – No fees, no hidden costs, and no sales pitches—ever.
  • Flexible Filing Options – Get personalized support at an in-person appointment or file your taxes online for free with MyFreeTaxes.com, a nonprofit-backed service available in English and Spanish.

Our Impact

Since 2007, Capital Region VITA has returned over $80 million in tax refunds and credits to working families, strengthening both individual households and the local economy. In 2024 alone, we helped file 5,400 tax returns, saving taxpayers over $1.6 million in preparation fees and returning more than $9 million to the Capital Region.

More Than Just Tax Prep

We proudly serve New York's Capital Region, offering:

  • Free, IRS-certified tax preparation to help taxpayers file accurately and maximize refunds.
  • Financial education and coaching on budgeting, credit-building, and saving.
  • Connections to community resources for food assistance, housing support, and job training.
  • Asset-building strategies to help families grow their savings and work toward financial independence.
  • Advocacy for economic equity, ensuring policies support working individuals and families.

At Capital Region VITA, we believe financial empowerment starts with knowledge and access. By providing free, high-quality tax preparation and financial resources, we help people take charge of their financial future and build stronger communities.
