Bright Starts for Brilliant Futures
Felicia experienced a difficult childhood of physical and sexual abuse, as well as alcohol abuse. When she found out she was pregnant, Felicia decided to take steps to create a better life for her daughter. She enrolled in a United Way-funded healthy birth and early learning program and looked forward to breaking the cycle of negative behavior that affected her early years. But Felicia's pattern of poor choices continued. She ended up homeless and had to obtain a court order of protection to shield her daughter from sexual abuse.
Thanks to the continuing commitment of her Family Support Worker, Felicia started to change her behavior. She learned the importance of establishing healthy peer relationships and how to create a safe home environment. With continued guidance, Felicia secured housing and a job paying a livable wage. Today, Felicia has stopped drinking and smoking, and she exercises regularly. Felicia's daughter is thriving and attends a quality day care program. Felicia recognizes that recovery and healthy parenting is a long-term commitment and she continues to receive monthly home visits from caseworkers who provide ongoing support and parenting education.
Your contributions help parents like Felicia break from their past and create a brighter future for their children. Thank you for caring.
